OPTIONAL. Taking $1,800 out of somebody’s paycheck because they missed a work dinner on their wedding anniversary is already wild. But sending an email beforehand saying the dinner was OPTIONAL makes this whole situation even harder to understand. Because what exactly was optional? The dinner or keeping your paycheck? And the way she handled it is probably the best part of this entire story. No big argument. No begging. She simply asked payroll to show her the written policy that allowed the deduction. Apparently, nobody could find one. Now imagine being that boss sitting in a meeting with HR and the finance director while your own email is being used to explain why you had no business taking that money in the first place. That’s an uncomfortable Monday morning. But the story gets worse when HR discovers seven other employees had allegedly been treated the same way. One was even on medical leave. Another paid $600 for missing a Christmas party because she thought she had no choice. Six hundred dollars to miss a Christmas party. At that price, the party better have included a vacation package and a new refrigerator. There’s nothing wrong with companies wanting employees to participate in events. Team dinners can be great. Holiday parties can be fun. But there’s a difference between encouraging people to show up and making them feel like their paycheck depends on it. And that’s what makes this story so interesting. She didn’t need some elaborate plan to get her money back. She had her contract, her completed work, and the boss’s own words. A month later, she says she got promoted. Sometimes the most effective response isn’t an argument. It’s asking somebody to put their reasoning in writing. That boss probably wishes he’d never sent that email.
The final whistle on the voting. Moreira takes the honors! 🏆
Swap the skin color or the religion in any of these sentences and the career would be over by lunchtime. Say it about white people, Christians or the West, and you get a podcast, a seat in parliament or a Senate nomination. You have to read these quotes through the lens of social justice, which Thomas Sowell called envy under a new name. When someone else is more successful, the easy explanation is that they must be privileged because they’re white. So the resentment grows, even toward the West that gave them more opportunity than almost anywhere else on earth. Racism never went away. It just found a target nobody is allowed to defend. 🗽 I created Basic Optimism to bring common sense back to the West. If you want to support this work, the Buy Me a Coffee link is in bio. Thank you for reading.
