✅ Common things doctors can claim tax relief on:
• General Medical Council (GMC) annual registration fee
• Royal College subscriptions such as Royal College of Physicians (RCP)
• Medical journals like BMJ subscriptions (if required for work)
• Medical defence organisation fees such as Medical Protection Society (MPS) or MDU
• British Medical Association (BMA) membership
• Mandatory courses required for your current role (not career progression exams)
• Work-related travel between hospital sites (not home to work commute)
• Uniforms / scrubs and laundry allowance (if you pay personally)
• Equipment you must use for work such as stethoscope, tendon hammer, or similar items
• Other professional subscriptions approved by HMRC
❌ Usually NOT claimable:
• Exams like MRCP, PLAB, or courses that help you move into a new job or specialty (career progression).
💰 How you receive the money:
You don’t get the full amount back — you receive tax relief based on your income tax rate.
• 20% taxpayer → you get 20% of the expense back
• 40% taxpayer → you get 40% back
HMRC may either:
• Adjust your tax code so you pay less tax each month,
OR• Send a refund directly to your bank account (especially for previous years).
📌 Steps to apply:
1️⃣ Log into your HMRC Personal Tax Account (Government Gateway).
2️⃣ Go to “Claim tax relief on employment expenses.”
3️⃣ Add your professional fees, subscriptions, and expenses with amounts paid.
4️⃣ Submit the claim.
📄 Do you need proof?Usually you don’t need to upload documents when applying, but you must keep receipts or evidence in case HMRC asks later. They can request proof during checks.
💡 You can also claim for up to 4 previous tax years if you haven’t claimed before — which could mean hundreds of pound.
