The Harsh Truth About the Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel - Not Good

To be fair to Ram, the idea behind the 3.0L EcoDiesel was excellent. A small-displacement diesel in a half-ton truck promised strong torque and impressive fuel economy — and on paper, it made a lot of sense.

The problem wasn’t the concept, it was the execution. From the very beginning, the EcoDiesel struggled with reliability issues, many of them tied to emissions systems and the engine’s light-duty design. While later generations of the EcoDiesel were noticeably improved, the damage to its reputation had already been done.

Yes, it delivered good fuel economy. Yes, Gen 3 was better. But overall, this engine was plagued with too many issues to truly succeed in a modern pickup truck application.

This isn’t about bashing Ram — it’s about acknowledging that sometimes a great idea just doesn’t translate well into the real world.

👇 What’s your take — misunderstood engine, or one Ram should’ve skipped entirely?

They do drive very nice and get great mileage. It sucks that they are plagued with so many common serious issues. I really want a gladiator with one 🫡

Your def wrong on this. Everyone complains about emissions on every diesel vehicle. It’s an absolute shame that the government mandates this dumb shit. It needs to come off every diesel vehicle in the world. Anybody that has emissions, EGR, DEF and so on should be changing their oil in half the recommended oil change intervals. Only go full term if the vehicle is deleted

I avoid any engine that starts with “eco”. Ecodiesel, ecoboost, etc…

This one I will have to agree. Even Cummins as bad when it’s attached to a Dodge. If I’m getting a Cummins engine… I’m going for the Titan, not the ram! At least a Nissan’s drivetrain won’t shatter itself
