LXXIV ❂ 1225 — Centuries on Salah Salem
Passing through Salah Salem road offers one of the best views of Cairo’s layered history. On one side stands the 19th-century Muhammad Ali Mosque, an Ottoman icon sitting high in the Citadel. Below it lies the Northern Cemetery, often called the “City of the Dead,” a unique district where life and ancient history have coexisted for centuries. Among the tombs is the Sultan Qaytbay complex, built between 1470 and 1474, which features one of the most famous and detailed stone-carved domes in Mamluk architecture.
