It’s Polar Bear Week. And there’s something the world’s leading polar bear conservation organizations aren’t talking enough about.

Polar bears are still being killed so their skins can be sold as luxury items. And some of the biggest conservation organizations continue to defend allowing that trade.

Including @polarbearsinternational and @wwf Smith

I’m writing this from Churchill, Manitoba, where I’ve been watching polar bears along the shores of Hudson Bay.

Just days ago, I was in Nunavut, where polar bears were being hunted in the same area we had travelled thousands of kilometres to photograph them. On our final day, we saw photographs of three bears that had been killed.

It was heartbreaking.

I’ve spent years photographing bears around the world. I understand that climate change is the greatest long-term threat to polar bears. I also respect Inuit subsistence hunting rights.

But why, in 2026, are we still allowing polar bear skins to be sold on the international luxury market?

And why are organizations that raise millions to protect polar bears defending that trade?

More than 4,000 polar bear skins were exported from Canada between 2002 and 2021.

We cannot restore Arctic sea ice tomorrow. But we can work to end the international commercial trade in polar bear skins.

We should be doing both.

I’ve respected Polar Bears International for years. But after examining their position, I can no longer support the organization while it continues to defend allowing this trade.

A polar bear should not end up as a rug on someone’s floor simply because someone is willing to pay for it.

This Polar Bear Week, I want people to ask harder questions. Ask Polar Bears International and WWF where they stand. Ask why they continue to defend this trade.

I’ve written an article explaining my position, including what happened in Nunavut and what the documentary @tradesecretfilm revealed.
