🏳️‍🌈this is what F A M I L Y looks like✨

The queer community often raises eyebrows at our ability to transcend definable relationship structures and create ones that can grow and change as we do.

Because our community is so small, we often find the greatest support and understanding in relationships that were once romantic partnerships. If you look at average close-knit lgbtq+ communities, you’ll often find strong patterns of traditional two-person romantic partnerships overlapping with close friendships, platonic life partnerships, romantic friendships, and any variety of non-monogamous dynamics that could blend any or all of the above.

I imagine it seems strange to the rest of the world but I believe this is what makes our community so resilient. Because we’ve already had to embrace the challenges of living in identities and lifestyles that societies and governments constantly invalidate and try to erase, there’s nothing barring us from re-writing the rules completely. This allows us to build networks of support that help stabilize and strengthen our communities against the unique challenges we face.

We get to blend, mix-and-match and recreate unique chosen families that fit just perfectly for the people in them. It’s not always easy but I think it’s one of the most beautiful things about our community. 🏳️‍🌈🦄🏳️‍⚧️

Today, @audbright and I ran errands related to finalizing our divorce. It was a bittersweet day….but really, much more sweet than bitter. We have both come so far in each of our healing and growth processes. I’m so grateful that we can peacefully complete these not-so-fun tasks and then go grab brunch in the energy of what still feels like a celebration of love 🥂💜

Audra’s been my ride or die for almost a decade and I’m happy to say that they pretty much still are.

Divorce really sucks, guys. I’m not going to lie. But when everyone chooses to take responsibility and become better through it, sometimes beautiful things can happen on the other side.

I’m forever grateful for these silly, sad and strangely beautiful kinds of days ✨🌈
