I’d worn this sweater to death but wanted to wear it again. Except it looked a little boring, so I went digging through my closet and found these gloves from three lives ago. Added the malachite earrings. Threw in this great clutch. I haven’t accessorized this much since my fashion week days. So funny that I should find myself at the Tuileries for this photo!
Protein bar packaging will promise a dessert that sounds like it belongs on a bakery’s seasonal menu. Chocolate fudge brownie, birthday cake frosting, caramel cookie dough—the descriptions are doing incredible work. Then you take a bite and spend the next thirty seconds trying to locate even a distant relative of the advertised flavor. Somewhere between the dense texture and the mysterious aftertaste, you start negotiating with yourself about whether it’s actually good. By the last bite, you’ve decided it’s “pretty decent for a protein bar,” which is a very specific category of forgiveness. The wrapper promised a celebration, and you’ve been chewing through a practical obligation.
October is a month I’ll look back on with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. This month has brought joy and pain, some physical for me (Maggie in the marsh and oyster cuts as a result, massive burns from stupid curling irons and leash tangles causing wrist tears) and some emotional (standing over my mom watching her body try to fight a 105.6 fever is something that will haunt me until the day that I die). But, we lived to see November. We literally thrived and then just survived this month. And the longer I’m on this earth the more that I find I’m a student of that rhythm. We all are. If I’ve learned nothing else, and if I could pass on only one lesson from these 46 years on the planet, let it be this. No matter how good you’ve got it or how bad your life feels right now, nothing lasts forever. It never gets easier and stays easier. Happiness is truly found in navigating both periods of your life with grace, as much grace as you can muster, for yourself and those around you. That’s something I’m still working on. And, to be completely honest, I’m crap at it but I’m trying. This was October… (Never been happier to hear Mariah Carey at midnight on November 1st).
