Mole checks and mole maps aren’t technically the same thing. A mole map requires high quality photographs taken of your whole skin at different angles coupled with photos of your moles with high magnification. There are a few machines out there that do this very well but traditionally it was done with a normal camera. A skin check or mole check is an examination of your whole skin where suspicious lesions are identified. Generally speaking a skin check is carried out before a mole map to decide which moles need to be photographed in more detail. The advantage of mole mapping is that it allows accurate comparison of any new or changing lesions with the use of photographs. Particularly useful for patients who have a lot of irregular moles or a history of melanoma.
