Are shoe insoles hurting your feet?
News Flash: Painful insoles are not normal!
If you’re wearing insoles and your feet hurt, you might be telling yourself it’s normal and your feet just need to get used to them. But the bigger question to ask is this: should insoles cause pain in the first place?
From a podiatrist’s perspective, there are a few important things to consider.
First: adjustment. Mild changes can happen in the first few days or weeks. Your feet are adapting to a new pressure pattern and new loading points. You might feel mild soreness in the arch or calves after longer walks. This can be normal.
Second: red flags. Persistent pain or worsening pain is not expected. Insoles should support your movement not make every step feel worse. If discomfort escalates returns daily becomes sharp creates pressure hotspots causes numbness or tingling or makes you limp something needs reviewing. The insole might be the wrong size wrong shape too firm or positioned poorly in the shoe. Or the issue needs a clearer assessment before choosing the right support.
Third: biomechanics and custom design. Insoles shift load through your feet ankles knees hips and lower back. Everyone has different gait mechanics arch shape joint mobility and muscle control. That is why effective insoles should be custom made and prescribed by a podiatrist after a full assessment including history hands on testing and a gait review. Then the orthoses are designed for your mechanics your symptoms your footwear and your daily demands.
