And so, we finally made it and set up base in our new home in the south west. We always had a plan to return here, and that’s become more important as our parents need a little more support. It’s a lot to ask of the youngest two, uprooting them from their lives and their friends. Hopefully they won’t hold it against us forever. We bribe them with beaches and surf and pasties. And a nice view. And time with cousins. And compulsory forest walks. And new kittens. Who the dog has given up objecting to. And commitment to a great Halloween. And time with cousins and grandparents in the pub. And visits to junk shops (oh, that’s just for me) And new clubs. And more pubs, and cousins and grandparents. So yes, it’s been worth it. So I’m now 50/50 north west/south west. Which means several days a week I hide away in Salford to devote myself to work (#devoted), life admin, and FaceTiming my beloved children/husband/dog/kittens. Mostly the dog tbf. We also bribed her with pasties.
Sen. Tim Scott says Republicans warned for months about an alleged scheme involving a Senate candidate dubbed "Decoy Dan" — and now the Justice Department is investigating. Scott is accusing the candidate, who shares incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan's name, of using similar campaign branding to confuse Alaska voters and siphon votes away from him. Democratic candidate Mary Peltola's campaign denies involvement, while the other Sullivan says he entered the race independently. Scott is warning that the alleged scheme could carry serious federal consequences. See what he says about the subpoenas reportedly issued in the investigation. Experts believe that the impressive progress of Chinese labs largely relies on the pace of their American peers pushing out the frontier. If America speeds up, so might China. If America were to slow down, Chinese labs would too. In the early stages of training, large language models (LLMs) are usually taught to mimic text on the internet. Now, a technique called distillation teaches them instead to mimic other LLMs. As AI becomes more capable, the extent to which Chinese firms are distilling the best American models has become an urgent question.
