Meet the Great Auk, the bird that originally inspired the word "penguin" long before the Antarctic animals were found. Native to the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, European sailors heavily documented these flightless seabirds in the 16th century.
While clumsy on land, they were agile underwater hunters that mated for life. Tragically, overhunting for their prized down feathers drove them to extinction. The last confirmed pair was killed on Eldey Island, Iceland, in 1844.
