I was born in 1987.

Back when doctors still thought smoking was safe… and babies were supposedly born either male or female and that was the end of the story.

Science has come a long way since then. So has our understanding of bodies, identity, and what it actually means to be healthy and whole.

When I was born, my parents had no idea they were bringing a queer, trans kid into the world. They didn’t have a handbook for that.

So they did the only thing they knew how to do. They raised me as a whole human. With love.

My sister got the same freedom. And she used it. Punk rock hair, rebellious attitude, tongue piercings and all. She was out there breaking the rules long before I understood why I needed them broken.

Even though she’s not LGBTQ herself, she made it safe for me to be. She paved the path just by being unapologetically herself.

Honestly, she probably knew I was queer before I did... seeing as how she spent my entire childhood calling me “homo,” the clues were there.

One day she finally asked me straight up if I was a lesbian.

I said yes.

And from that moment on she became my fiercest ally and biggest defender.

Now she’s raising two incredible kids who have somehow turned into my fiercest defenders too.

And every day I’m reminded how lucky I am to have a family who sees me, knows me, and loves all of me.

Science evolves.
Understanding evolves.

But love… that part has always been right. ❤️
