منم یه زمانی فکر می‌کردم نمی‌تونم، الان وقتش نیست، شاید از پسش برنیام و هزار تا بهونه دیگه، تا اینکه یه بار بالاخره به خودم گفتم بابا جان اگه من نه، پس کی؟ اگه الان نه، پس کِی؟!

The same thing that makes ibuprofen and other NSAIDs work on pain also lowers the protection on your stomach lining...

On a recent Ask Me Anything episode, a listener asked me, “How bad is ibuprofen really?”

I hear it all the time in my telehealth practice, usually from someone who wants to know if one or two for a headache or cramps is okay.

Here’s what’s happening...

Ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are NSAIDs, and they work by blocking enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) that make prostaglandins. Prostaglandins drive inflammation, swelling, and pain, which is why blocking them helps.

But they also protect your stomach lining, reduce excess stomach acid, stimulate gut-protective mucus, and support your kidneys and blood flow to your liver.

So when we block them, we’re not only turning down pain. We’re turning down the things that protect your gut.

The more you take and the more often you take it, the more likely you are to run into issues.

But I don’t want you to be afraid of it! If one ibuprofen a month is what gets you through a day of bad cramps, or a headache is keeping you from sleep, the benefit can outweigh the risk.

Use the lowest dose that works, as infrequently as you can, and if you take it regularly, check in with your doctor.

If you reach for it often, it’s worth trying natural options like curcumin, boswellia, white willow bark, and magnesium, and asking what’s behind the pain in the first place.
