When does patina become damage… 2 snowflakes, my black dial 9411 and this rather intriguing blue dial β€˜flakey flake’ When I met up with Stef @saltvintagewatches last week he had a watch roll full of amazing pieces, but this jumped out at me. Missing its bezel and half its dial colour, strapped on a bleached phoenix nato, it looks every bit the hardened tool watch that’s spent a life in action. This watch came to him in pieces, and he was determined to get it back together and working. Despite the temptation to restore it fully, its current condition is so damn cool. Think apocalypse now meets Lenny McLean 😁 Happy #subsaturday β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
STRENGTH RESERVE: One of my favourite topics from my conversation with the JEDI GRANDMASTER OF NEUROSCIENCE @hubermanlab was the concept of STRENGTH RESERVE! πŸŽ™οΈ Full discussion with Dr Andrew Huberman on Huberman Lab (link in story!) The principle is simple: the stronger you are, the smaller the percentage of your maximum strength required for each swimming stroke. So, theoretically, increasing your weighted pull-up strength could make thousands of repeated strokes relatively less demanding! πŸ”¬ THE SCIENCE: πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄ Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Aspenes et al., 2009): Found that 11 weeks of combined strength and endurance training improved swimming pulling force and 400m performance. πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄ Nord University (Fone & van den Tillaar, 2022): A systematic review of 27 studies found that combining strength training with swimming generally improved performance, with gains of approximately 2–2.5% across training methods. Of course, strength must be combined with technique and endurance, but the research supports a simple principle: DON’T JUST TRAIN TO SWIM MORE. TRAIN TO GET STRONGER TOO! πŸ’ͺ
