Brut. journalist Skyler Hurt was at James Talarico’s rally in Texas when media projections showed the Democrat winning the state’s US Senate race.

Talarico defeated Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton, ending a 32-year statewide losing streak for Democrats.

The state representative’s victory gave his party a major boost in the fight for Senate control, in a state Trump carried by 14 points in 2024.

In his victory speech, Talarico spoke about love and taking back Texas as supporters celebrated the result.

Sometime between 10/31/26 and 11/1/26 my father, Charles Edwin Stallings passed in his sleep after a long battle with a myriad of health problems he’d been facing for some time. Charlie’s existence will be remembered in my eyes as being defined by ambition. His level of dedication to the concept of achievement is something I rarely see to his level and I was always very impressed with. It is easy to be proud of his many accolades, the list of which seems endless. When I was growing up our relationship at times was defined by mental sparring, the kind of debates that would come naturally to two strong willed individuals of the same genetic makeup. As I’ve thought about it, there could not be a more appropriate dance and cadence to our formative years together. No son of Charlie’s would be one to not dig their heels in, and him in kind. There were so many instances of him wanting to teach me life lessons that I wasn’t yet ready to hear or consider, but now hold as integral parts of my being, and I thank him for each and every one. He did so much for me and his family, even if he had lived decades longer I would never have been able to repay him for all his gestures. Before he passed he wrote a letter that included the aspect that he respected me. This was something I always sought from him and that simple sentence meant more to me than he probably knew, the man I respected above all other men. May his spirit live on in all the capacities he would have wanted it to. It certainly will in me and in my eternal love for my late father, Mr. Charles Edwin Stallings.
