A fascinating corner of the world 🌍… here in SE London, along the Thames, where heavy industry shapes daily life.
This week I had the chance to watch river barges bringing aggregate into the Tarmac asphalt site – a brilliant example of how the Thames is still very much a working river. 🚢 It’s incredible to see the material unloaded directly from the boats and carried by conveyor onto the site, ready to be processed into the asphalt that keeps London’s roads moving.
What really struck me was the constant choreography of river traffic: tugs, barges and workboats all carrying out their day-to-day manoeuvres on this busy waterway. It’s a side of London we don’t always see – the behind-the-scenes logistics that keep major infrastructure and construction projects supplied, while taking HGVs off the road and reducing emissions in the process. ⚙️🌊
River haulage on the Thames isn’t just a nod to our industrial past; it’s a smart, sustainable part of London’s future.
