The Crested Auklet (Aethia cristatella) is a small seabird native to the North Pacific and Bering Sea, best known for the distinctive, forward-curving crest of black feathers on its forehead.

Why these seabirds stage a rowdy springtime love-in ...
In addition to its unique "hairdo," this bird has several other fascinating traits:
Citrus Scent:
During the breeding season, both males and females emit a powerful, pungent odor that smells like tangerines or citrus. Scientists believe this scent helps attract mates and may even act as a natural repellent against ticks.
Mutual Ornamentation:
Unlike many bird species where only the male is flashy, both sexes of the Crested Auklet sport the curled crest and bright orange bill.
Larger crests are often preferred by both sexes when choosing a mate.
Massive Colonies:
They are highly social and nest in enormous colonies—sometimes exceeding one million individuals—on remote, rocky islands and sea cliffs.
Expert Divers:
They are excellent swimmers that "fly" underwater to hunt for krill and other small marine life.
