Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) changed art forever. He rejected ideal beauty and painted saints, heroes, and biblical figures as real people—dirty feet, wrinkled skin, wounded bodies. His radical use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) dragged sacred stories into the real world and became one of the foundations of Baroque art, even being an inspiration for Dutch painters like Rembrandt.

His life was as intense as his paintings. In Rome, Caravaggio lived among criminals, courtesans, and street fighters. He was arrested repeatedly for violence and in 1606 killed a man, forcing him into exile. From Naples to Malta and Sicily, he painted while on the run, filling his works with themes of guilt, justice, faith, and the desperate hope for redemption. He died mysteriously in 1610 at just 38.

Among his most famous works are The Calling of Saint Matthew, where divine light interrupts ordinary life; Judith Beheading Holofernes, raw and unflinching in its violence; The Supper at Emmaus, bursting with dramatic realism; and David with the Head of Goliath, a haunting self-portrait disguised as a biblical defeat. Each painting feels alive—caught in the exact moment everything changes.
