The hosts of The View asked me about hormone replacement therapy, and I had a lot to say.

Twenty-three years of new data and women are still being undertreated for menopause. What happened in 2002 was a turning point in the wrong direction. A study with flawed methodology made headlines, those headlines scared the world, and an entire generation of women were denied something that could have genuinely helped them. Doctors pulled back. Patients panicked. And the ripple effects are still being felt in exam rooms today.

Here is what we know now, according to The Menopause Society: for women who are under 60, within 10 years of menopause, and at low risk for heart disease, the benefits of hormone replacement therapy outweigh the risks. That is not opinion. That is the current science.

I take HRT myself. And I will keep talking about it.
What I will also say is this: it is not DIY, and it is not one size fits all. Women need to have this conversation with their doctors. And their doctors need to be current on what we have actually learned since 2002. That part matters just as much as the conversation with the patient.

If your doctor is still practicing like it is 2002, that is information worth having.

Still misinformation. BHRT is safe for any age, a woman just receives more benefits starting early. The benefits include cardiovascular health. One day they will get it right.

And yet women that have had hormone driven breast cancer can't take it. The doctors put us on depression medicine. It helps but coming off these medicines are no joke.

This is such an important clarification. The long-term impact of the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study is still shaping care today, despite how much the evidence has evolved. Highlighting current guidance from The Menopause Society, and the importance of individualized, physician-guided decisions, really helps bridge that gap between outdated fear and present-day science.

The rest of us >10 years post menopause and >60 years are screwed. 😢 😔 ☹️

Thank you for this! I have been taking bioidentical HRT since I turned 50 and was in complete menopause for a year. I am now 66. I have no history of cancer in my family. I go to an integrative medical Dr who trained with Dr Rouzier. For years I had discussed this with my GYN and other GYNs I worked with ( I’m a maternity RN) and they ALL told me I should not be taking hormones. I said, “You all will see someday that you are wrong and I am right”. Well, the day has come! Now the narrative is changing. I’m so happy to see this. Hopefully more women can see they have options and can take advantage of this treatment for better and improved health.

So sad for so many women. Inaccurate research contributed to women aging poorly internally and externally way before their time.❤️
