10 things I wish someone told me before I started modeling…
1. Never pay to start working with an agency! Legit agencies will never ask you to pay beforehand, they earn when you earn.
2. It gets lonely. Modeling is about traveling, which is cool because to meet a lot of amazing people, but it’s also hard to build a new life every three months.
3. Social media matters. There is a lot of models nowadays, so its harder to get noticed. You need to build your social media presence - a lot of brands care for the number of followers.
4. Networking matters just as much as your portfolio. Be kind with everyone and ask for their socials! It will get you a lot of opportunities.
5. Learn the business side early - contracts, rates, rights… It’s important to know what you are signing!
6. Attitude > looks — good energy, professionalism, and a strong presence will book you more jobs than just being pretty. Most of the brands I work with end up booking me again, so be kind and easy to work with!
7. Rejection is part of the job. You will hear no on a daily basis. Don’t take it personal - clients are looking for specific things (season, vibes, trends, sizes..) so you are not the problem. Keep a strong mindset and keep trying your best!
8. Be open-minded - you’ll meet people from all kinds of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Stay respectful, adaptable, and willing to learn… it will not only make the job easier, but also enrich you as a person.
9. Have a side hustle. Modeling is not stable (most models you know are probably broke lol) so it’s important to have another form of income.
10. Be yourself!! Don’t try to fit every trend, your uniqueness is your power.
