I was 11 when I got my first ever barrel at Silkies. Straight into a closeout… somehow came out, and ran up the beach in disbelief to ask
@heinieoosthuizen mom if she saw it. She used to sit patiently in her blue Passat, watching us surf and happily confirmed my rite of passage!
I was so stoked that I even drew it in my school book to show my friends the next day!
That feeling, that vision, hooks you for life. The chase has been real ever since in the Blue.
On Saturday, I was back out there… but this time with Eli and Tommy.
@dietakhaarman still threads tubes like few can and watching him guide Eli, helping him find his line, positioning him, talking him through it, was pure gold. Even more special to capture it all in the moment.
Silkies got its name from the old Springbok Cafe that once stood there in front of the wave, run by the Silk family. Generations have passed through this place.
It holds history. Stories.
From the old timers saying it was better “back in the day” with two barrel sections… to the next crew of Boland grom frothers like
@sebastian_surf_walser learning the craft and now boosting airs on the end section.
Same wave. Different chapters.
From chasing them… to watching your boy pull in. 🤍
