On May 28, 2023, Cyrus Carmack-Belton was fatally shot in the back by convenience store owner Rick Chow in Columbia, South Carolina after being wrongfully accused of shoplifting four bottles of water. He was 14 years old.

This week, Chow was found not guilty of murder by a South Carolina jury.

This tragic injustice, rooted in anti-Blackness, is not an isolated incident, however. In 1991, 15-year-old Latasha Harlins was fatally shot by Soon Ja Du, a Korean American convenience store owner. While Du was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, a judge allowed her to avoid jail time. This, along with the acquittal of the four police officers who brutally assaulted Rodney King in 1991, were among the catalysts for the 1992 LA Riots, which resulted in more than 50 people killed, more than 2,300 injured, thousands arrested and a total property damage of about $1 billion.

Anti-Blackness continues to show up persistently in Asian communities due to historical, cultural and systemic factors including the model minority myth (literally created to pit Asians and Blacks against each other), proximity to whiteness, racial triangulation and a lack of intersectional awareness. As Dr. Latanya R. Hughes notes, anti-Blackness serves as a survival strategy for many Asian immigrants. These frameworks are so deeply rooted and internalized that it takes active and intentional work to dismantle and unlearn them.

Cyrus, Latasha and countless others should still be here today. Rick Chow should not be a free man. We, as Asian North Americans need to not only acknowledge but also sit with the discomfort of our proximity to power and privilege. And we need to use that proximity and power for collective action and solidarity.
