The title of Ultimate Survivor has followed #JennylynMercado well beyond her time on โ€œStarStruck.โ€ Itโ€™s a distinction now often tied to the personal chapters of her life, though she has never quite felt it was hers alone to claim. Having had to stand on her own from a young age, @mercadojenny has gained a clearer sense of what strength means and what matters most to her. For Previewโ€™s November 2026 cover, she reflects on the experiences that brought her here and the convictions she stands by. It's always a good idea to have a healthy skepticism for science-based fitness. But that is especially true when they are telling you that there is no difference between two things or no advantage to one thing over another because the tools they most commonly use are explicitly not designed to draw the conclusion that there's no difference between two things. Now if they tell us that something does make a difference when the bros don't think it does, then id at least want to hear the argument, because at least that's something their experiments should in theory provide evidence for. But when the bro consensus say something matters and the science guys says it doesn't you can safely disregard them. Why does a calorie surplus help intermediate and advanced lifters build muscle? I have no idea, mechanistically, and that's what trips up the science guys, there's no mechanistic reason why the body couldn't use stored energy and still build muscle at maintainence. But if we look at it from an evolutionarily perspective, what problem was the body's increasing resistance to adding muscle designed to solve it becomes obvious. Its designed to balance the demands of the environment for strength with not becoming to energy hungry. What's the best way to shift that calculus? Show there's plenty of food available by eating!
