“Plants of the Gods”
Acrylic on canvas, 20x24 inches
Prints for sale, link in bio. The original painting is also for sale, DM with interest.
A painting to honor the Aztec deity Xochipilli, the Prince of Flowers, who was considered the god of art, music, dance, fertility, and hallucinogenic plants. There is a beautiful stone carving of Xochipilli in modern day Mexico City, which this painting is based off of. On the statue, ethnobotanists have identified 4 species of plants and fungi that were central to the Aztec’s ceremonial rituals; Ololiuqui (Rivea corymbosa), Sinicuichi (Heimia salicifolia), Teonanacatl (Psilocybe spp), and Tobacco (Nicotiana spp). The alkaloids contained in these plants, whose molecular structures are depicted in the mandala above the figure, are LSA, Vertine, Psilocybin, and Nicotine.
I absolutely love the expression on the original statues face, that appears to covey both a state of ecstasy, agony, and molecular bliss. How important these plants must have been to a people’s to decide to carve them into stone for future civilizations to contemplate…
The title of the painting is a nod to an incredible podcast @plantsofthegodspodcast by an inspiring ethnobotanist @docmarkplotkin Who also used an image of Xochipilli as his podcast thumbnail. I can’t recommend it enough if you are interested in the world of psychoactive Plants of the Gods.

"The fact is clear that the Devil was at first considered a God, and was worshiped as such by several nations, including some of the early Christian sects. And the same is true of Jesus Christ and the Devil, that the same titles were applied to each, an evidence that they were both derived in common from the Pagan conception of good and evil, virtue and vice flowing and emanating from the same fountain, which was primordially the sun." - Kersey Graves, The Biography Of Satan, 1924, opensource on archive dot org, pun intended 🌞
