Kenyan law professor Phoebe Okowa has been reelected as a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a full nine year term, securing Kenya’s representation at the United Nations court until 2036. Okowa won 183 votes in the UN General Assembly and 13 votes in the 15 member Security Council during elections held in New York on Tuesday, November 3. She secured the position after three rounds of voting, with Sierra Leone withdrawing its candidate to support her. Okowa first joined the court in November 2025, becoming the first Kenyan judge to serve at the ICJ since its establishment in 1945. She replaced Somali judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, who had resigned. She is a professor of international law at Queen Mary University of London and previously became the first African woman to serve on the UN International Law Commission. Her new term will run from February 6, 2027, to February 5, 2036.
