The Obelisk of Thutmosis III
Located near the Lateran Palace in Rome, this obelisk stands over 32 meters high and weights over 450 tons. It was commissioned by the egyptian pharoah in the 1400s BCE, making it over 3400 years old. It was imported in the 4th century CE by the Romans and initially stood near the Colosseum as a symbol of Romes imperial power. In the 1500s, the pope moved it to its current location to be used as a landmark in Rome and to emphasize Christian superiority over paganism. It is decorated with extraordinarily well preserved hieroglyphs praising Thutmosis III connection to divinity.
