I thought they were cigarette butts A remarkable rock covered in hundreds of cylindrical and circular patterns appears to be crinoidal limestone, a sedimentary rock packed with fossilized remains of ancient marine animals called crinoids. Despite their plant-like appearance, crinoids are relatives of starfish and sea urchins that have inhabited Earth’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years. The distinctive patterns are fossilized fragments of crinoid stems, which were made of stacked, disc-shaped skeletal plates. After the animals died, their remains accumulated on the seafloor and eventually became embedded in limestone. Some deposits contain so many crinoid fossils that they make up most of the rock itself.
