There are inheritances that arrive as possessions, and others that become part of one’s way of seeing. This small arrangement holds both.
My mother was a professor of geography and the principal author of a school textbook from which generations of children across Russia learned to read the land. Her work shaped the way countless young minds understood distance, terrain, weather, and place.
For me, it also shaped something more intimate: a lifelong instinct to notice patterns, traces, and the invisible threads that connect one point in life to another.
Here are her binoculars, once carried to theatres and on student expeditions; a compass, as a emblem of orientation and return; her pen, and mine beside it; and the journals that have become my own way of making sense of experience.
I think so much of what steadies us begins long before we have words for it. The deepest foundations are often laid in love, attention, and the example of those who came before us.
This is my small tribute to that lineage — to intellect, curiosity, tenderness, and the enduring thread that continues to shape the map of my life.
