“of the Devil” is a cyberpunk detective visual novel developed by nth circle studios, where you play as a criminal defense attorney, Morgan. The game oozes style and is confident in what it is. This is showcased through its strong writing and memorable cast of characters. It does an amazing job at settling you into its neon, dark, and indifferent world. Coated in a layer of high-stakes gambling through its gameplay mechanics and Morgan’s personality, it makes a strong impression on any first-time player. If you’re a person who doesn’t take much convincing beyond a couple of strong recommendations, I would advise you just to trust me on this one and try episode 0 for yourself, which is free on Steam on both Windows and Mac. You’ll know for sure by the end of it if it is for you.
You can feel the ambition in of the Devil as the stakes rise and the stage of the courtroom gets increasingly grand. It is a journey everyone should take a chance on, even if you are less familiar with visual novels as a medium, as many genre conventions that some may bounce off of are minimal to non-existent here, and that is in no small part due to its writing. The game knows where it’s heading and gives players just the right amount of information, leaving them hungry for the next one. If you’re a fan of games like Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, Umineko, or other visual novels, the DNA of those games can be seen in this package. Or if you enjoy competently written yaoi and/or yuri, there is something in it for you as well.
