6 months agoI remember when I bought my used Ford Excursion and posted my ideas.. The negative comments I received were amazing.. I just knew it was the right platform for “me” and that makes the difference is to know what you want… Now after 20 countries and living in it for over 3 years.. I still love it and just want to keep it running… The best vehicle is the one you want to drive, build, etc.. Good discussion.. You just have to know you.. 👏 See you on the trail or road😃
6 months agoAgree 100%. I built our first van from scratch, including adding a poptop and 4x4 conversion, because it was the only way we could *afford* it. When we outgrew that, I knew I didn't have enough weekends left with my teenager to waste them building a second rig. Better to write the painful check!
7 months agoLove this podcast @scott.a.brady and how deep you go into the consideration set. Another alternative before drop $$$ on an EarthRoamer… is rent one on @outdoorsy first. Try it in the real world before you commit, or just consider a no strings, attached approach to renting for your first trip
7 months agoGood morning @scott.a.brady from sunny Perth, Western Australia. In 2 years, I'm considering shipping my 120 Prado to Port Klang in Malaysia then driving it into Europe, via China solo. What are the biggest challenges I'll be facing do you think? Any suggestions? It's either the Prado or a Vespa scooter
7 months ago“Just go buy it” is such an overlander statement. That’s why I’m not an overlander. It used to mean something. Now it’s majority about money and clouding the primitive experience by dragging all the modern amenities into the backcountry. There are so many reasons to build and take that time as part of the experience.
7 months agoIf you build it yourself you know it in ways that will be beneficial when there’s no one to call for a fix.
7 months agoI've spent years at this, trying to find the secret sauce perfect expedition vehicle. I could have been travelling for years now if I had just pulled the trigger on my original plan. Goldilocks syndrome (analysis paralysis) is real.
7 months agoReally interesting conversation to listen to. Best practices aren’t the same as they were five years ago, so it’s super useful to understand the current market dynamics.
7 months agoI always tell people this when they ask me about building a rig. It took me two years to build this two years sitting in my backyard while all my friends were out doing camping adventures, guys. I don’t see as often anymore, some have moved and other life is different. Not to mention the toll it can take on your family.
7 months agoAgree with Matt! The LR3s and LR4s can be found at bargain pricing. With some DIY wrenching these make incredible platforms to start with.
