Fyodor Dostoevsky (born November 11, 1821 [October 30, Old Style], Moscow – died February 9, 1881 [January 28, Old Style], St. Petersburg) was a Russian novelist and short-story writer whose profound psychological insight into the darkest corners of the human soul, combined with rare moments of transcendent illumination, left an indelible mark on world literature.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists who ever lived, Dostoevsky’s influence on 20th-century fiction is immeasurable. His works helped shape literary modernism, existentialism, and numerous schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism. Often described as prophetic, his novels eerily anticipated the behavior of Russia’s revolutionaries once they seized power. In his own time, he was equally celebrated as a passionate and influential journalist.
