I said yes to a phone call one day and this was a good lesson that I will remember – always say yes to things [or most things!] as it led to one of the most enjoyable, challenging and stimulating chapters of recent years.
Didn’t win… but we did win in so many ways [inc. run 2 of the British😉]. Sport is full of pathos; the successes, the failures, the ‘whens’, the ‘if onlys’ but the direction over the period was the right one and we(he) went from scoring 80s to scoring 30s and being ranked just a smidge over 500th in the world in slalom – sounds a lot but not at all bad for a non-alpine nation athlete.
Still, to my mind the best thing was that I saw someone that really and truly expected not to win become someone that learned that ‘they could’ and that their effort and sacrifice can produce something cool.
No need for me to repeat how hard the life of an athlete in this sport is but I hope, and I am sure, that when all things are summed up you can be proud of your career and I’m honoured to have shared the journey with you. Thankyou my friend.
