Edward S. Curtis was an early 20th-century photographer and ethnographer known for documenting Native American tribes across the United States. His goal was to create a comprehensive visual record of Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions that he believed were rapidly changing due to modernization. During his work in Canyon de Chelly, he photographed Navajo life and landscapes as part of his larger project, The North American Indian, which became one of the most extensive ethnographic collections ever produced.

The great ancestors of the Dine watch and wait from within the cliffs of the canyons....for the day they shall return again to reclaim what was once theirs.
