CAMERON HERRIN, WHEN SPEED BECAME A DEATH SENTENCE*
*It started as a race, it ended with two lives gone forever.
*On May 23, 2018, Cameron Coyle Herrin, then 18 years old, was street racing through Tampa, Florida, alongside another driver. Surveillance footage later showed Herrin driving at an extreme speed, far above the legal limit, on a public road.*
As 24 year old Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt crossed the street with her 21 month old daughter, Lillia, Herrin’s car struck them with devastating force. Both were killed instantly.*
*Herrin was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. At trial, prosecutors argued that his reckless decision to race turned his vehicle into a deadly weapon. In 2021, a Florida judge sentenced him to 24 years in prison, 9 years for Jessica’s death and 15 years for Lillia’s.*
*After the verdict, the case exploded online. Viral edits, sympathy campaigns, and misinformation reframed Herrin as a victim, often erasing Jessica and Lillia from the story entirely.*
*The court’s message was clear, speed is not an accident, and consequences do not disappear because someone is young.*
*Is this justice, or a sentence that sparked the wrong kind of sympathy?
