2 months agoI finally watched this movie last night and I have to confess, I was not mentally prepared for the rabbit hole it would send me down. I felt like I had a lump in my heart after watching Calle Malaga. I did not expect this movie to be as culturally, emotionally, and visually multi-layered (the scenes in Asilah are breathtakingly beautiful) as it was. The lead character of Maria Angeles is like nothing I have ever seen in a movie. She is a stunning manifestation of resilience, relationship-building, youthful vigor/tenacity, and resourcefulness. Carmen Maura as the lead actress is a real winner for this movie. Last, but not least, this is a fascinating glimpse into a community we almost hear nothing about. I always thought of Spaniards as colonists in the context of North Africa – but the lead character is clearly the remnant of a community that came to Tangier as refugees from the Franco regime. From what I have read so far, this community barely exists in Tangier anymore. The momentary inclusion of the Gran Teatro Cervantes is an effective metaphor for this community. Hence, it is fascinating that the plotline of this movie revolves around this almost non-existent social strata of Tangier. I am also in awe of Maryam and Nabil for being unwavering in their commitment to shining a spotlight on issues and also taking a bold and boundary-breaking approach to rallying people around a more evolved view of aging, dignity, respect for moorings, and fairness. Maryam, I am humbled by your creativity and ability to channelize your grief from the loss of your mother into this movie – which is an artistic work of unbridled beauty. Greetings from New York City!
