“Where are all the women?”

Rayna Vallandingham grew up looking for pieces of herself in action. She found them in Bruce Lee’s speed, Michelle Yeoh’s presence, Kill Bill’s Beatrix Kiddo and the video games she spent her childhood playing.

A 13-time world champion and fourth-degree black belt, Vallandingham had been practising martial arts long before acting entered the picture. Now, after roles in Cobra Kai and Citadel, one of those childhood worlds is becoming her own as she steps into the upcoming Street Fighter as Juli.

“I want to be the first black-belt female martial artist who is able to do all of her own fight choreography on the big screen and mainstream media,” Vallandingham shares. It is an ambition informed by the women who opened doors before her, but also by what she still finds missing.
