In September 1926, Mencken published a column criticizing the growing popularity of sensationalist tabloid newspapers.

He argued that publishers often made more money by appealing to people's ignorance and prejudices than by offering thoughtful journalism.

He also extended his criticism to politics, writing, “Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

The famous quote is a shortened version of his original statement, published nearly a century ago in the Baltimore Evening Sun on September 18, 1926, and reprinted in the Chicago Tribune the following day.

A drunk driver allegedly rammed his white Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara into a street vendor's cart near Murga Market in Ashok Vihar, North-West Delhi.

When police inspector Somvir Lochab arrived at the spot to investigate, the driver reportedly attempted to bribe him to avoid legal action. However, the inspector refused to accept the money.

The inspector also ensured that the street vendor received compensation for the damage caused to his cart.

The incident highlights the importance of honesty and accountability among law enforcement officials. Driving under the influence of alcohol puts innocent lives at risk.
