In Balochistan, Pakistan, the ancient karez system -lifeline of the desert-faces decline from technology and climate change. A community stands at a crossroads, guided by memory and resilience.
The film is a poetic and observational documentary that explores the challenges being faced on arid lands, through the lens of a vital water conflict in Pakistan. It contrasts the karez, an ancient and sustainable water system that has nourished the land for centuries, with the arrival of modern technologies and climatic changes.
“Forgotten Flows of Karez”, directed by Mir Abdul Malik and Hammal Aslam (Pakistan), won third place in the “Back to Our Future” prize, an initiative of Let's Talk About Water and WAMUNET, with the support of IHP/UNESCO.
