If trees could talk, what stories would this old Hollow Ponds guardian tell? 🌿

Painted en plein air in a single sitting, José Moura’s ‘Old Tree, Hollow Ponds’ captures a fleeting encounter with one of the most characterful corners of this much-loved landscape on the edge of Walthamstow and Leytonstone.

There’s something almost cinematic about Hollow Ponds - especially its old trees, bent and shaped by time in ways that feel quietly dramatic.

This particular tree stopped José immediately. Warped and twisting, it stood almost like an old figure, its branches reaching outward with a presence that felt strangely human.

You can’t help but wonder what it has witnessed over the years - seasons shifting, generations passing through, the city slowly changing around it.

The result is a painting that feels just like Hollow Ponds itself - ever-changing, full of character, and quietly magical..

Drop us a message if you’d like to find out more about this beautiful little piece.

A really atmospheric plein air study the way the tree is described as almost human gives the painting a strong narrative presence, and the focus on Hollow Ponds as a changing, lived-in landscape adds to its quiet sense of history and place.
