There’s a small architecture firm in Morelia, Mexico that stops me in my tracks every time I see their work.
I’ve been developing a design philosophy I call reductive design. The conviction that great work isn’t about adding, it’s about reducing until only truth remains.
HW Studio has been living that philosophy in environments before I had a name for it. Four projects a year. One at a time. A neuropsychologist on staff. Listening to the landscape before designing. Buildings that seem to recede into landscapes rather than announce themselves. Ancient and futuristic at the same time.
Their restraint isn’t a style. It’s a practice. And it’s the clearest proof I’ve found that less, done with conviction, is the most powerful design decision you can make.
When I reached out to HW Studio, Rogelio Vallejo Bores (founder and architect) replied, “It truly means a lot to us to know that our work has stayed with you in that way — there’s something very special in that pause you describe, and it’s beautiful to feel that connection across distance.”
