“What does a producer actually do?”

It’s a question asked by audiences, artists, and even producers themselves. Even without the title, artists historically just did whatever it took to get their work in front of an audience. How then did this survival tactic evolve into a distinct, specialised job?

To find out, we shine a light on untold histories of Singapore’s pioneering producers. By mapping these local stories against a broader global history, we look at how early practitioners defined their responsibilities when few models existed. What prompted these artists to take on producing roles, and how did their varied experiences shape the norms we operate by today?

Facilitated by Audrey Wong, this forum features differing and complementary perspectives from Annie Pek, Aravinth Kumarasamy, and Shaifulbahri Mohamad.
