Ærlig, finnes det en bedre dag enn 17 mai?? (Og ja, mine fremtidige unger får tidene minnebok fra 20 åra mine)
Left Australia for the best day of the year:
Norwegian National Day (17th of May) is bunad or a dress you feel the weirdest, but prettiest in before 8am. It’s streets full of marching bands, kids waving flags, and strangers smiling at each other like it’s the easiest thing in the world. It’s endless hot dogs and ice cream, champagne breakfasts where you continue to drink all day long, singing until your voice is gone, and dancing through the streets with no real plan except joy.
It’s “hipp hipp hurra” everywhere you go, long tables filled with food and laughter, and a kind of chaos that only makes sense once you’re in it. For graduating seniors, “russetid” adds even more madness — a uniquely Norwegian tradition that turns the end of school into weeks of celebration and freedom.
But beyond all the fun, it’s also about something bigger. It marks our constitution from 1814 and celebrates freedom, democracy, and the country we live in today. We dress in our traditional bunad not just for tradition, but for pride, history, and identity.
I don’t take it for granted.
Being born with a Norwegian passport is a privilege, and I’m genuinely grateful for the safety, freedom, and opportunities that come with it.
And what makes it all so special isn’t just the history — it’s the fact that for one day, everyone shows up. Friends, neighbors, strangers, families, all Norwegian.
…all in the same street, with the same energy, all together to celebrate this unique and unforgettable day, all as one.
In other words, if you haven’t experienced it yet, put it on the top of you bucketlist.
You won’t regret the Norwegian culture at its peak.
Gratulerer med dagen Norge🇳🇴🍾❤️
