Travelogue for May 23 & 24.

My eyes are so full of ancient beauty, and my blood hums with ancient memory.

Saturday we toured the Heraklion Acrhaeological Museum. I didn’t take all the photos I could’ve, because Michele Fitztola took many, as well.

The feeling of aliveness in some of the images is very strong. How the colors have held for 2000-4000 years is something of a miracle. I didn’t get any images of the jewelry, but the beads and gold amulets were very similar to what was on sale at the shops along the way to the museum. I loved imagining the women who wore them either as necklaces and earrings or as decorations for clothing or hair.

Yesterday, Sunday, we drove along the coast and then inland through grove after grove of olive trees to Eleftherna. The museum didn’t allow photos so you’ll have to settle for the ones I took from the van.

That museum focused on the archeological sites and discoveries in the nearby sites that are still being unearthed and explored. We also visited the working site of a community crematorium and burial ground from around 900 BCE when Homer was writing The Iliad. There are connections between the archaeological finds and the stories Homer wrote.

We then went to the Melidoni Cave, and you’ll have to settle for the photo I have from the brochure. I saw others (not of our group) taking photos, but the sacredness of being within the belly of the earth that dates back 200 million years and has been used as habitation, refuge, and worship dating from about 5000 BCE.
