Meet Bastian, the Talking Terrier.
Rescued from the floodwaters of Hurricane Florence as a puppy and adopted by Joelle Andres in 2018, Bastian was shy, skittish, and struggling with separation anxiety. Through patience, enrichment, and a deep bond with his family, Bastian slowly grew into the confident, adventurous dog he is today. Using a communication board with nearly 100 buttons, he shares his preferences, observations, and thoughts, helping millions of people better understand canine cognition and the rich inner lives of dogs.
Named PEOPLE’s World’s Cutest Rescue Dog in 2025, Bastian’s story reminds us that every dog is an individual, not a label, stereotype, or first impression. His journey is a testament to resilience, connection, and the extraordinary potential that exists when dogs are given the chance to be seen for who they truly are.
#LoveWithoutLabelsHis mom, Joelle, says:
“When I adopted Bastian shortly after he was rescued from Hurricane Florence, I thought I was bringing home an adventure buddy. Instead, he changed my life.”
“Teaching Bastian to communicate with buttons helped me better understand his world, his preferences, and his needs. It made me a better caretaker and helped him grow into a more confident dog.”
“He inspired me to become an advocate for rescue pets, learn more about canine cognition and enrichment, and connect with an incredible community of people who share that passion.”
“More than anything, Bastian has been my best friend. His resilience has taught me so much about healing, patience, and appreciating life’s simple moments. To many people he’s a determined terrier who loves treats, but to me, he’s a daily reminder of the profound impact a rescue dog can have on your life.”
