Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy for Ohio governor, according to the Associated Press, becoming the first Democrat to win the office since 2006 after a tight race that turned ugly in its final stretch.

With 85% of the vote reported, Acton had 50.7% to 46% for Ramaswamy.

Acton’s victory capped a race featuring two lead candidates who had never served in elected office. Acton, the former director of Ohio’s Department of Health under Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, graduated from medical school after growing up in Youngstown, Ohio. Ramaswamy previously ran for president before dropping out and endorsing President Trump in January 2024.
