Growing up in a Chicago suburb, @reemashihadeh did what many third-culture children do as they traverse from one ethnic nucleus to another: conform. At school, she’d ask her sister to slick her curly hair back into a sleek, straight bun in an attempt to hide her texture. She understood, even as a kid, that she looked different than her peers. But back in Palestine, where she’d spend the summers with her extended family picking figs from their trees and laughing, playing cards into the late hours of the night, she felt like herself. It was in the journey between her Palestinian and American identities that she found comfort in her own unique characteristics and came to understand beauty not as a physical concept, but rather a state of being, “an energy.” Last month, Shihadeh launched @zaiiebeauty, a brand centered on Palestinian heritage which sources ingredients from the olive grove that’s been in her family for generations.
