Phyllis Bridges

I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized as a recipient of the Sankofa Society of North Carolina Heritage Award.

My heartfelt thanks to the Sankofa Society of NC for this incredible honor. To be acknowledged alongside such distinguished community leaders is both a privilege and an inspiration. This award represents more than individual achievement—it reflects the collective efforts of those who are committed to preserving, promoting, and celebrating African and African American heritage through education, advocacy, leadership development, and cultural preservation.

As a historian, storyteller, and community advocate, I am guided by the Akan principle of Sankofa—"Go back and fetch it." This powerful philosophy reminds us that we must learn from our past, honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, and carry their stories forward for future generations.

I share this recognition with my family, supporters, community partners, and the many individuals who have trusted me to help preserve and tell our stories. Through the work of Yalik's African American Art & Cultural Movement, I remain committed to ensuring that our history is not forgotten, our culture is celebrated, and our legacy continues to inspire.

Thank you, Sankofa Society of NC, for this meaningful honor. I am grateful, encouraged, and motivated to continue this important work.

"We carry the fire—honoring the past, igniting the future, and passing the torch."
