three years ago today, you and i were born together. two babies clinging to each other for dear life because nothing made sense except the person pressed up against them. i’d never been so afraid until i realized we smelled the same and you would stop crying when i sang to you. remember when we shared a heartbeat? sometimes i suspect we still do. i barely remember the time before you, but i know it must have been incredibly boring. nowadays you have a lot of opinions about dinosaurs and which songs are “too loud”, and you always have to wear a dress when i’m wearing one so we can be princesses. you smile at strangers, laugh when the joke isn’t funny, and i’ve never had to tell you to be gentle when you pet someone’s dog. i must have plucked you out of the stars one night in my dreams and carried you all the way down with me, hand in hand, forever and always. i love you josephine.
