Elissa Slotkin did not get caught whispering. She said it on a stage, on camera, at the University of Chicago, with a live audience and a podcast microphone. If Democrats retake the Senate, she said, they should pursue what she called signature cases against the people who served the president, not just the president himself. She named sitting officials as targets. She said she wants young conservatives terrified of ever working in a Republican administration. She called it a deterrence message, and she meant it as a threat. She talked about impeachment too, and then admitted the problem: a Senate conviction needs Republican votes she does not have. That is the whole ballgame. The prosecution list, the impeachment talk, the deterrence threats, all of it needs a Democratic Senate majority to mean anything. Slotkin already has her seat. What she does not have is the majority. The one seat that decides whether she gets it is the Texas seat, and the candidate running for it has spent his campaign telling Texans he is the reasonable one. So Texans are not voting on a slogan. They are voting on whether the woman who promised to prosecute the last administration’s staff gets the majority to do it. Talarico in the Senate is Slotkin’s majority. Slotkin’s majority is subpoenas, signature cases, and a standing threat to every young conservative who ever thought about public service. The senator from Michigan said the plan out loud. The only question left is whether Texas hands her the votes to carry it out. Tuesday answers it.
