Artists in Action: Hoisting a Whale
Art, science, engineering, and community are coming together in a remarkable way at VCA.
This week, a formidable team lead by
@elalamblin with volunteers, fine art installers, and technicians will hoist and install a 3,000-pound kinetic whale sculpture beneath the atrium’s soaring 40-foot cathedral ceilings.
At the heart of this extraordinary work is Singer’s bones, 40-foot gray whale singer who washed ashore on Vashon in 2024.
Ela has brought together a dedicated team of volunteers to help create the sculpture and its supporting structure. For the installation, has added to Ela’s team specialists from Art Tech to safely raise this monumental work into place.
The project is a powerful blend of artistic vision, engineering expertise, and hands-on craftsmanship.
Vashon Nature Center spearheaded this two-year journey—from recovering the whale’s bones from the beach, to commissioning artist Ela Lamblin, to partnering with VCA to provide a permanent home for this beautiful and inspiring piece.
Come experience the whale for yourself during VCA’s 60th Birthday Bash on June 20. The gallery opens at noon, and festivities run from 3–6 PM.
Vashon Nature Center whale docents will be on site to share the story behind this extraordinary project and answer questions about the whale, the artwork, and the community effort that brought it to life.
